Step off the cobbles of Helmsley Market Place and down Meeting House Court, and you’ll find one of the town’s real treasures: Helmsley Arts Centre. Housed in a lovingly restored Quaker meeting house from 1812, this much-loved venue has become the beating heart of the town’s cultural life.

What makes HAC so special is its blend of heritage and community spirit. Saved and reimagined in the early ’90s, rebuilt after a devastating fire in 2000, and expanded thanks to the generosity of local supporters, the centre is a living example of what Helmsley does best - coming together to create something lasting and vibrant.
Step inside, and you’ll find an intimate 138-seat auditorium hosting everything from theatre productions and live music to cinema screenings, comedy nights and National Theatre Live broadcasts. The atmosphere is warm, friendly and unpretentious — the kind of place where you can just as easily enjoy a Shakespeare play as a night of jazz or a thought-provoking film.
But Helmsley Arts Centre is far more than a performance space. It’s a creative hub where local groups thrive:
